Stein - The Relative

  1. This is the first official music video from my dear band and flophouse roommates, Stein. Our cameraman, Sambath Eat, did a phenomenal job, he's got such a great eye for a good shot (although it takes him a while to get there). And Poopette Smith, our editor, did a really fun and interesting job on putting the video together.

My first impression was that it was over-edited. It's pretty phrenetic. There are so many shots laid over shots, and it's a lot to take in all at once. But the more I watched it, the more I saw these "oh I see what you did there" moments, and realized more and more how incredible a job Jessica did.

That being said, I find this video to be a bit of a sleeper. I like and appreciate that greatly in music, most worthwhile albums are going to take some time to process. I don't necessarily think that should be the case with music videos, I think that should be the piece that tries to grab you right off the bat, with interesting aesthetics and concept... it's a work of art on its own, but it's got to leave you with a good first impression to keep you coming back for more. Anyways, just wanted to give a heads up, it might take more than one watch to start figuring out what went into this.

But as far as aesthetic, I think we nailed it. This shit is blacklight fever, it looks like a disco party in a basement in portland. Which is exactly what we are. It's fun, it really captures the essence of this band, of this particular creative assembly of weird but awesome individuals.

But hey shit, this is the point where we have to grab people right off the bat. We have to not only be musicians who can get together and get along long enough to make awesome music (which, trust me, is hard enough on its own) but we have to create all this imagery, be up on social media, artwork, videos, stories, just like bang out content to try to get people interested, and move us past the playing dive bars and basement parties. It's going to continue to be a lot of work.

Stein is planning on doing a music video for every song on our upcoming EP 'Accidance'. Not an easy feat, it's going to take a long time, and our budget is approximately 20 bucks at the moment. But who knows, maybe we'll get another buck or two in tips at our show at the Tiger Bar this Saturday. That could help.

We already have the next music video for the tune 'Desperate Creatures' almost ready. If we can, we're going to try to premiere that at our Flophouse party this Friday. That one was directed by our cameraman Sam, and that kid did something so creative and artistic and interesting, and involved the whole Stein crew dressing up as different kinds of plants. I'm so excited for when that comes out.

For now, here's The Relative. So cheers fellow music-heads and creative sorts, that's enough rambling from me for now. Let's keep making awesome stuff.

  2. Accidance! What a great EP title. Like the blacklight fever. Watched three--now four-- times in a row. Don't think it's too frenetic. Ski mask throughout is a good look. Feel like I'm in a lava lamp with you guys. If I went to see your show, this is the kind of nonsense I would hope for. And Turtle Power (the fucking shit).
